Angels

(In memory of the MH17 victims)

No word or lyric or line will ever be good enough

To catch those tears dripping from the cheeks

Of their fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters

No photo will ever be good enough

To capture the glistening black convoy

Creep crawling like ants carrying leaves

The leaves that landed below sunflowers

To build the pillars of a new empire

An empire of grief around the heart of a nation

But no image will ever be good enough

Not good enough

Not good enough

It’s just not good enough

That feeling I first felt at the age of six

Maybe younger

When I didn’t win that art prize

Or that race

Or when my parents had to work late

Neither relativity nor excuses are good enough

These words are not good enough

Our world is not good enough

Our world where a crying sun sheds rainbows

Where butterflies carry miracles

And tug of war is played across borders

It was never good enough

For your children

Now angels perched at the gates of heaven

For only as angels

And a brief visit

Will this world ever be good enough

Another great poem on an incident that I’m sure cut you deep. Returning to the first time you felt that the world was ‘not good enough’ is really effective. That ending is so powerful A powerful tribute.

Ta! It’s what I like poetry for… matching words with emotions. Emotions are great aren’t they?!
